Here's the result of the latest Tessai/Claus brainstorming... Since it seems most of the team likes the shield idea, except for balancing reasons when a mecha design doesn't have a shield, me and Tessai contemplated the idea of holding two weapons at once (for example, the Sazabi holding two axes). We can also add two handed weapons for some more carnage.
The shield will be treated as a weapon, and will need aiming in the direction of the strike to work (somewhat like the Bastard Sword from ChaosUT). If a mecha will use a shield, he will have to sacrifice one of his weapons (instead of holding two rocket launchers he will have the launcher and a shield).
What do you guyz think of this idea?

8) Hmmm, by jove that just might work. However, wouldn't you want all the mecha to have shields for balance reasons? Even if the physical depiction of the mecha does not include a shield, how bout generating an energy shield with the same penalties of weapons sacrifice? Drop your extra rocket launcher to generate the shield...

I don't know..... While it might make balancing the mechs easier, it might also reduce the game's versatility. Will require more thinking and planning. Thinking is not my department

Very weird... it didn't take my reply. Basically what I said was to allow 3 weapons, but only 2 at most are used at a time, the other is stored on a hardpoint. Limiting to 2 weapons seems kind of... limited, especially if one is a shield and the other is a weak one handed gun. I also think that the CBMs should be standard, you cant get rid of them (unless you run out of ammo, of course) as well as a basic rifle or something. I don't know. Sounds like we need a big team chat. Why don't you pay SG and I a visit in IRC, Iirion ?

...You're going to allow more than 3 weapons, aren't you? That'd be kinda...boreing... sorry to say.

Sure, each mecha design has it's default mele weapon and shield, but then they should have lots of other built in weapons, tooo. What kind of mecha only has 3 weapons??? How about launching fist? lol!

Yes I agree DNA, but only one melee 8)
Wonder if we oculd use the shield as a battering ram...

I suggested that, but they started whining about how hard it is to code.

Well, we thought it was. Until the coder himself decided it wasn't . SG: Check team images forum if you want to see that axe in 3d .

I don't know how hard implementing the shield will be, but I'm sure it's possible. I luff challanges And I didn't mean the mecha will have a total of two weapons, but rather that he'll hold two weapons every time. That doesn't neccesserily mean all mecha should have a shield- for example, if I recall correctly EVAs don't have one. So while adding a shield to all mechas will make balancing their complete weapon set easier, it might reduce their versatility (though it'll allow a Shield Arena deathmatch
